The Dham

About Shri Kedarnath

Set at about 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, beside the Mandakini river and beneath towering snow peaks, Shri Kedarnath is one of the holiest abodes of Lord Shiva — a Jyotirlinga, the highest of the Panch Kedar, and part of the sacred Char Dham of Uttarakhand.

The ancient stone temple, reached by a mountain trek from Gaurikund, has drawn pilgrims, sages and seekers for centuries. Tradition connects it with the Pandavas of the Mahabharata and with the great revival of the Char Dham by Adi Shankaracharya.

The Call of Mahadev

Where snow-covered peaks meet timeless devotion

Kedarnath stands as one of the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. According to tradition, the Pandavas sought Mahadev here after the Kurukshetra war — and Shiva, appearing as a bull, disappeared into the earth, leaving his hump worshipped at Kedarnath.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Kedarnath located?
Kedarnath is in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India, at about 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, beside the Mandakini river. The nearest trek base is Gaurikund.
Why is Kedarnath famous?
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, and part of the Char Dham of Uttarakhand — making it one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites.
Is Kedarnath a Jyotirlinga?
Yes. Kedarnath is counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred shrines of Shiva, and is the northernmost and highest of them.
Who built Kedarnath Temple?
The original builders are unknown — no foundation inscription survives. Tradition credits the Pandavas with establishing the shrine and Adi Shankaracharya (c. 8th–9th century) with reviving the present temple.
Did the Pandavas build Kedarnath?
That is the religious tradition, not a historically verified fact. The Pandava association is sacred narrative; the stone temple’s actual builders are unknown.
What is Kedarnath’s connection with the Mahabharata?
Tradition holds that after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Shiva here for atonement. Shiva, as a bull, dived into the earth; his hump remained at Kedarnath and other parts appeared at the four other Panch Kedar temples.
What is Panch Kedar?
Five Himalayan Shiva temples — Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar — where, by tradition, parts of Shiva’s bull form appeared to the Pandavas.
What is Gaurikund?
Gaurikund is the last motorable point and the base of the Kedarnath trek, named after Goddess Parvati (Gauri), who is traditionally said to have performed penance here.
